BUILDING FROM THE GROUND UP

Our practice has a long and rich history in the town of Scarborough, dating back to 1956 when it was founded by Dr. John Kerr.

At the time, he was renting space at the South-West corner of Brimley & Eglinton (right above Bill Brown Shoes). A decade later, his twin brother, Dr. Jim Kerr, sought a career change and followed in his brother’s footsteps to pursue dental school - prompting Dr. John to find a space to accommodate both of them. Fortunately, he found vacant land at 540 Brimley Road just in time for his brother’s graduation!

Dr. John focused on treating children, and also split his time as a clinical instructor at the University of Toronto Pediatric Dentistry clinic, while Dr. Jim practised primarily with adult patients. Visiting families appreciated that both parents and their children could attend the same office for their unique needs and fondly remember the large glass aquarium separating the two clinics. In successive years, the building underwent much growth and even accommodated up to four operating clinics at one time!

DENTISTRY AT 540 & BRIMLEY SOUTH DENTAL

In 1987, the Kerr family’s dental legacy grew as Dr. John’s son, Dr. Bill Kerr, joined the practice as his first associate, and eventually partnered with his father in 1989. The following year, classmates and new graduates Drs. Brad Oldfin and Mike Cusato joined as associates to Drs. Jim and John respectively.

After serving the community for nearly four decades, Dr. John finally hung up his loupes in 1993, leaving his son the sole owner of his practice. Before seeking a new partner, Dr. Bill decided to enable his practice with modern technology and implemented their first computerized appointment booking system. He then welcomed Dr. Cusato as his partner in 1997.

A year after his brother’s retirement, Dr. Jim sold his practice to Dr. Oldfin and then eventually retired himself in 1995. This left the second generation Dr. Kerr and Dr. Cusato in Suite 101 where they renamed their practice Dentistry at 540. Just across the hall in Suite 102 was Dr. Oldfin’s practice, named Brimley South Dental Centre, and the three remained friendly neighbours for many years to come.

In 2011, Drs. Kerr and Cusato ventured north and founded Dentistry in the Highlands and began to split their time between Scarborough and Minden. Five years later, Dr. Oldfin followed suit, but instead travelled east to Trenton and acquired Riverside Dental Centre, also splitting his time between offices. And so, the three doctors decided it was time to seek another colleague who could offer the Scarborough community the time and attention they deserved.

Present Day - 540 Dental

Upon graduating from the University of Toronto in 2018, Dr. Kiran Gosal joined as an associate to Dr. Oldfin. She was a classmate of Dr. Bill’s son, and was inspired by the legacy of 540 Brimley Road. Soon after joining, Drs. Kerr, Cusato and Oldfin found that Dr. Gosal’s commitment to patient care, innovation, and community service resonated with their own values and decided that they had finally found their successor.

In 2019, Dr. Gosal became the proud owner of both practices and is honoured to be the third generation of dentists practising at 540 Brimley Road, along with her associate Dr. Kruytbosch. She occasionally shares the office with her husband, Dr. Rupinder Dhaliwal, who practises primarily at his own office in Fenelon Falls.

Dr. Oldfin officially retired from 540 Dental in June 2023. Drs. Kerr and Cusato are still part of the journey and remain associates to this day.
